On 16 October 2026 it will be nineteen years since Toše Proeski died on the highway near Nova Gradiška. Every year members of this board ask the same question in the weeks before: what is the right way to mark the day? There is no single answer, but there are some traditions worth knowing.

In Kruševo
The grave at Gumenje and the Memorial House next to it are the centre of the day. People arrive from early morning with candles and flowers, and there are religious services. If you are going, travel early, dress for mountain weather — Kruševo is over 1,350 metres up — and read our etiquette page. It is a day of prayer for many visitors, and a family grave first of all.
In Skopje and other towns
In 2007 people spontaneously gathered on Macedonia Square and in squares across the country. Many still do something similar, more quietly: a candle at the statue on the Art Bridge, a walk past the square, or a visit to the fountain in Aerodrom.
At home and abroad
Diaspora fans cannot always travel. The most common tradition we hear about is simple: playing a whole album through in the evening. Many choose Božilak, his 2006 record of traditional songs; others prefer the final album, Igra bez granica.
Giving in his name
Toše was a UNICEF ambassador who held charity concerts and helped equip the haematology department of the Children's Hospital in Skopje. His last concert raised money for schools. A donation to a registered children's or education charity is very much in keeping with his life. If you organise a collection, keep it transparent and do not present it as an official family or museum initiative.
